Corhaven Cemetery, referred to as the “Sam Moore Slave Cemetery” in Volume 8 of Borden’s Tomb Inscriptions of Shenandoah County and Border Counties (1986:96), contains the remains of formally enslaved individuals associated with an antebellum plantation along Holmans Creek. The cemetery lies on the slope of a wooded hill along the boundary line which was noted in the Fairfax Grants of 1750. It contains approximately 2 dozen sunken graves, some with fieldstones, two with uninscribed manufactured and broken monument bases, and one with obelisk-shaped fieldstones.
